The
right portable smoke eater needs to have carbon filtration to
handle odors, accompanied by either electrostatic or media filtration for the
particles. Media filters,
similar to those in your HVAC system, are composed of fibers woven together
(cloth-like or paper) and may also be made of hospital grade HEPA paper. Media
filters trap various sizes of particles and pollutants by "blocking" them out of
the airflow, whereas electrostatic filters charge and collect the
particles, pulling them out of the airstream. Finally, carbon
filters adsorb odors from the air.
Several portable smoke eaters contain even more air purification technologies,
such as UV and specially blended multi-gas filters; However, the most important thing to remember
in choosing an effective portable smoke eater is pounds of carbon,
rather than mere ounces that will be used up very quickly.
