Electrostatic precipitation works like a magnet does with metal shards. The magnet is charged one way and the metal shards oppositely, so they stick together. The same is with electrostatic precipitation. The electrostatic precipitator plates are charged alternately (positive, negative, positive, etc..) and attract the particles to them.
