Remember that smoke tends to settle anywhere from about
seven to twelve feet above the ground. Maybe a ceiling smoke eater would not
work for your bar, but a wall mounted one could, or vice versa. Another
important part of an effective bar smoke eater is the technology. The most
effective bar smoke eaters have more than one type of filter. The most popular
contain a media pre-filter, an electrostatic filter, and carbon.
Media pre-filters are usually made from woven fibers or paper and look similarly
to the filters in your HVAC system or like they're made from coffee filters.
Pre-filters remove larger smoke particles and other pollutants like hair and
dander. Next, is an electrostatic precipitator (commonly called an electronic
filter). An electrostatic precipitator consists of alternately charged metal
plates and works with the positively charged particles in the air like a magnet.
These filters are most effective at removing very small particles from the air
(the ones that can pass through the media filter). These electrostatic plates
can also be removed, wiped off, and reused, thus reducing filter replacement
costs. The final filter in an effective bar smoke eater is a carbon filter. Most
smoky environments need a few pounds of carbon, so the filter doesn't need to be
changed as often. Carbon filters are filled with activated carbon that absorb
smoke odors like a sponge. Keep in mind that the bigger the sponge, the more it
can absorb.
