Trion SE 800 Smoke Eater Review

If you are looking for a dependable, easy to use and value priced smoke eater for your home, office, bar or restaurant, the Trion electronic air cleaner SE400E or SE800E may be just what you need. These units are the most popular smoke eaters in the extensive BPA product line. These electronic air cleaners are low profile and work for just about any installation application.

The powerful SE800E offers 800 CFM that can provide 10 air changes per hour in a 400 square foot room with a 10 ft. high ceiling. The SE800E has been tested at 95% efficiency; meaning that it removes 95% of smoke, dust, pollen, lint, bacteria and mold. The SE800E is the lowest priced unit that offers 800 CFM. The SE400E is a less powerful version of the 800. It is compact, yet high effective, providing 400 CFM.

Both of these quality air cleaners are easy to install. The SE400E fits neatly into a 2’ x 2’ ceiling tile and the SE800E fits into a 2’ x 4’ ceiling panel. Installation options include semi-recessed, flush mount, and wall mount. These units offer the added convenience of a wall mounted fan speed control. These electronic air cleaners utilize what air quality experts refer to as “Coanda Aerodynamic Principle”. Coanda uses a 360 degree airflow pattern that is the most efficient way to circulate air. The Coanda principle takes advantage of the natural, upward movement of air. Polluted indoor air naturally enters the bottom of the air cleaners and clean air recirculates in all 4 directions. Install the SE400E or SE800E directly overhead in problem areas to capture smoke and particles BEFORE they disperse. This eliminates what is referred to as “dead spots”. These units also provide a nice savings on air conditioning and heating costs as the air is recirculated inside the building, as opposed to being exhausted outside. The coanda airflow patern prevents heavy drafts associated with “pass-thru” air purifiers.

Another cost saving benefit of the SE400E and SE800E is that they are electrostatic precipitators, eliminating costly filter replacement. In this process, charged particles are attached to the oppositely charged collector plates like a magnet. All you have to do is periodically take out the plates, clean them off, let them dry, put them back in and you are set to go.

The best cost savings of these units is the price itself. Right now, you can save at least $500 on the Trion SE800E. For an even bigger value, you can buy 4 of them for less than $1,000 each! That’s $700 off of list price and far below contractor pricing you may find from distributors. Smokeeter LS Review

A popular option for bars, restaurants, bingo halls and casinos that have t-bar type drop ceilings is the fully concealed Smokeeter LS system. the Smokeeter LS requires a good three feet of clearance between the t-bar and the true ceiling. I would say that "you may have seen the Smokeeter LS in action," but as they are completely conceled, you wouldn’t see them at all. Applebee’s all over the country use two Smokeeter LS smoke removal systems in each restaurant, so though you may not have seen them, most people have been in an Applebee’s and probably never noticed that these unit were running.

I personally reccommend the Smokeeter LS system whenever it will fit an application, and for several good reasons, it is the quietest solution, it combines washable electronic filter cells and a significant ammount of granulated carbon (with optional carbon plenum shown to the left) and it offers powerfull and cost effective solutions without ever being seen and barely ever heard.

With washable electronic filter cells, there are no expensive HEPA filters to continually purchase, which save thousands of dollars in replacement filter costs. The only thing that needs replacing is the 6 odor absorbing carbon trays (about $45 each) every 6-12 months. The Smokeeter LS provides 1500 CFM of airflow, which is enough to provide over ten air changes per hour in a 1,100 square foot area. Because they are completely conceled, these smoke eaters can be run on high speed without causing excessive noise.

The included wired remote switch, hooks up like a thermostat and allows the unit to be controlled and switched on and off, without having to climb a ladder. The remote includes a large red indicator light so that you can see when the smoke eater is running.

There are several Smokeeter LS packages available, which are shipped with attractive 2′X2′ ceiling tile return and supply grills. Insallation is fairly simple, just hang the unit above the drop from anchored cables, replace a few standard ceiling tiles with the return and supply grills and connect flex duct between the flanged grills and the Y conncetors that are included with the packaged systems.

I would like to start the review section off by talking about the AQE Everclear CM11 Deluxe. This is a media based flush mount unit that is very popular with upscale commercial customers, such as country clubs, cigar bars, champagne bars and fine dining restaurants, as well as upscale home rec rooms and bars. The unit is designed to fit into a 2′ X 4′ T-Bar type drop ceiling and requires 20 inches of clearance above the ceiling. The Everclear smoke eater is a self contained system, so there is no additional ducting to install. It utilizes the coanda airflow pattern, to create effective air circulation to help pull smoke into the smoke eater.

Because of its flush mounting and size, it is not possible for many applications, but for those who have the clearance, this is an awesome air cleaner and one of my very favorite to recommend. I know each time a client of mine purchases these smoke eaters, they are going to be impressed.

So you may ask why I like this particular unit so much?
Well, for starters it has 44 lbs of VOC blend gas phase media! That’s more than twice the amount in any competing air cleaner. The special VOC blend is made up of granulated, activated carbon and potasium permanganate. This enables the Everclear smoke eater to remove a wide range of chemical fumes and odors. Upscale customers expect the best results and combining its huge 95% DOP particle filter with 44 pounds of gas phase media, this smoke eater delivers every time.

I personally like the control mounted remotely (away from the unit), preferably at the lightswitch level, either behind the bar or in the kitchen. The remote control of offered with the Everclear smoke eater hooks up with a low voltage 5 wire lead, the same way that a thermostat hooks up to an HVAC unit.
